Poem What Was Told, That What was said to the rose that made it open was said To me here in my chest What was told to the cypress that made it strong And straight, what was Whispered the jasmine so it is what it is, whatever made Sugarcane sweet, whatever Was said to the inhabitants of the town of chigil in Turkestan that makes them So handsome, whatever lets the pomegranate flower blush Like a human face, that is Being said to me now. I blush. Whatever put eloquence in Language, that’s happening here The great warehouse doors open; I fill with gratitude, Chewing a piece of sugarcane, In love with the one to whom every that belongs!

  3. Tone • Tone- The authors attitude towards his audience may be deduced from the tone of the work • The tone of the poem is positive Example- “I fill with gratitude, chewing a piece of sugarcane” (lines 13- 14)

  4. Imagery • Imagery- The array of images in a literary work Example- “The pomegranite flower blush like a human face” (lines 9-10)

  5. Hyperbole • Hyperbole- In literary criticism, deliberate exaggeration uses to achieve an effect Example- “The great warehouse doors” (line 13) This is an example of hyperbole because the warehouse doors aren’t that great.

  6. Point of View • Point of View- The narrative perspective from which literary work is presented to the reader • This poem is 1st person Example- “What was said to the rose that made it open was said to me hear in my chest” (lines 1-2) This is an example of 1st person because it has “I” in it.

  7. Analysis The poem What Was Told, That focuses on nature images. The speaker loves nature because it reflects god and he loves god.
