Brief History • Langage Farm has been a working farmstead for > 900 years • Mentioned in the Doomsday Book • The Harvey family started making clotted cream on their AGA selling to friends and local stores • The business now places products with major retailers including Sainsburys, Tesco, Waitrose and Morrisons

  3. Reason for plant • Milk yields falling • Soil structure failing • Grass roots unable to cope with drought • Compaction in the soil

  4. Decision build an Anaerobic Digester

  5. Drivers for plant size selection • Power requirements • Land mass available • Feed stock availability • Money available

  6. Help needed • Provided assistance with a grant. Application was very tough but had assistance from the university of Plymouth • We are still collaborating with University of Plymouth on AD feedstock and digestate analysis and with the KTP program

  7. Other benefits to environment • Maximising the potential of anaerobic digestion to reduce • the carbon footprint of the food supply chain • Providing renewable heat and power to a food processing factory thereby eliminating the use of 40,500 litres of heating oil and 867144 kWh of electricity from the grid each year which are estimated to produce 100 and 470 tonnes of CO2 respectively • Reducing use of inorganic fertilisers in primary agricultural production thereby saving approx 300,000 kg CO2e • Reducing water usage and treatment by using washing water from our food processing factory to supply our proposed AD facility, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of our food processing activities associated with treatment
