  1. IEEE Computer SocietyCloud ComputingFuture Technologies Sub-Strategy • Irena Bojanova • Chair, Cloud ComputingFuture Technologies Sub-Strategy, IEEE CS

  2. Agenda – July 25, 2012 • Introduction • Work area • Updates by Group • Conferences • Standards • Education • Publishing - focus discussion • Body of Knowledge - focus discussion • Web Portal • Newsletter - focus discussion • Testbed

  3. Updates • Interview with The Kiplinger Letter – Irena Bojanovaon Cloud Computing in China and its implications • Working Area – Theresa McNeill • Gathering IDs to to be given access • Need to have functionality for volunteers to join

  4. Status – All • Define Scope – use a poll: (1) Novel applications -best practices, case studies, common APIs; (2) Get info from CLOUD keynotes - security expert + testbeds • Cloud computing service/deployment/architecture models • Service ecosystems • High performance computing • Big data • Cloud based mobility • Determine customer needs, prioritize, get the bigger ones done first ->Chris will share results • Determine which activities will support IEEE CCI; Which are only ours

  5. Web Portal • Gabor Kecskemeti • Calton Pu • Aldo Román Nureña • Sorel Reisman • Chris Jensen (SE) • ? (PM) • Have to get prototyping moving – Gabor • Find out what search engine is used by Smart Grid – Theresa and Chris

  6. Publishing • Wes Chou (GL) • Liang-Jie Zhang (LJ) • Vojislav Misic • George Pallis • Lars Jentsch (SE) • Alicia Stickley (SE) • Proposed “Top 10 list” of keywords • Cloud Consumer – Sub-categories : Saas, PaaS, IaaS • Cloud Provider– Sub-categories : Saas, PaaS, IaaS • Cloud Service Management – Subcategories: Provisioning, Interoperability • Cloud Carrier – Subcategories: Mobility • Cloud Security • Cloud Privacy • Private Cloud • Public Cloud • Cloud Auditor • Cloud Broker • Need to continue to recruit volunteers for data mining effort. Can we offer temporary accounts to Digital Library and/or Xplore? Generate count of IEEE assets that fall in a Top 10 category.

  7. Publishing • Wes Chou (GL) • Liang-Jie Zhang (LJ) • Vojislav Misic • George Pallis • Lars Jentsch (SE) • Alicia Stickley (SE) • Created a cloud homepage within Computing Now and are storing cloud items there until our cloud portal is built. Visitors can see 3 videos from CLOUD 2012, PowerPoint presentations from that conference, and the Cloud magazine sample. Steve Diamond's CLOUD 2012 presentation is now there and so is Dejan's.  More content is being added weekly.  Click "Playlist" on the lower left of the video box to see the individual items.  http://www.computer.org/portal/web/computingnow/cloud2012 • Adding Cloud 2012 videos to our youtube channel.  http://www.youtube.com/user/ieeeComputerSociety • Preparation of the Phase 2 proposal for cloud magazine is on track.

  8. Chuck Walrad • PavanBalaji • Gayn Winters • San Murugesan • Eric Burger • Dante David Body of Knowledge • BoK Form factor will be wiki, not published book. This allows us to publish and augment incrementally. • LifeRay is probably not our platform of choice. The SEBOK platform is an option.

  9. Chuck Walrad • PavanBalaji • Gayn Winters • San Murugesan • Eric Burger • Dante David Body of Knowledge • There is a lot of info in the NIST technology roadmap that could be used as base material for info aimed primarily at an IT audience. • The academic & research communities are already served by the many cloud books available.

  10. Chuck Walrad • PavanBalaji • Gayn Winters • San Murugesan • Eric Burger • Dante David Body of Knowledge • The Education group has already determined their areas of focus independently, so in order to present a cohesive front, our BoK should probably support those areas as its first “chapters”.

  11. Newsletter • Wes Chou (GL) • CaltonPu • Margo McCall (SE) • Newsletter Title Poll sent out. Please provide your input • Proposal for first Newsletter Content • At least 1 article targeted to Cloud Consumer audience • At least 1 article targeted to Cloud Provider audience • At least 2 articles on recent trends in Cloud Computing • News articles? Does IEEE staff have reporters (i.e. VMWare buys Nicira)

  12. Conferences • PavanBalaji(GL) • JiaZhang • San Murugesan • Mooney Sherman • CaltonPu • Carrie Walsh (SE) • Carmen Saliba(SE) • Start recruiting volunteers from conferences • Tag assets – 41 CS CC conferences – Pavan and Carrie (share with Web Portal group) • Technical Sponsorship Request – Irena and Theresa

  13. Education • Don Shafer(GL) • Dennis Frailey • San Murugesan • Leandro Navarro • Dorian McClenahan (SE) • Determine which courses/webinars will need use of testbed – Dennis and Don • Adjust SMEs database model for CS CC STC volunteers database – Dennis and Don

  14. Don Shafer(GL) • Dennis Frailey • San Murugesan • Leandro Navarro • Dorian McClenahan (SE) Standards • Our standards WG chair is David Bernstein, who was on the development team for the NIST whitepapers. Thus, we can be pretty sure of alignment with NIST priorities. • Not clear that additional WGs should be spawned right now.

  15. Testbed • Michael Kozuch (GL) • Rick McGeer • ? (PM) Testbed • Determine with ED what resources would be needed and for which courses • Obtain resources for CC educational activities – Rick and Mike

  16. Additional • New volunteers orientations – Irena • TCs communication plan – honor each TC chair, ask for experts – Irena • NIC funding – how to apply – Angela to talk to Kathie

  17. Questions • It is the High-Tech Wild, Wild West out there. • Although the CC marketplace is still chaotic, it is: • Exciting • Fast-growing • Full of opportunities
