  2. Romanticism • Literary, artistic and philosophical movement • Emphasizes on emotions and imagination • Praise of the primitive and common man • Appreciation of external nature • This movement validated strong emotions • Apprehension, terror, awe, and horror

  3. Romanticism • Reached beyond rational and Classicalist ideal models • Revived medievalism and elements of art • An attempt to escape the confines of population growth and industrialism • Embraced the exotic and unfamiliar

  4. Art • Emphasis on imagination and emotion • Many of the Romantic artists were trained in Jacques-Louis David's studio including: • Baron Antoine-Jean Gros, Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson, and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres EugèneDelacroix's Death of Sardanapalus

  8. 18th Century Romantic Music Romanticism was first used to describe new ideas in painting and literature; the word was later taken up by musicians to describe the changes in musical style. Romantic composers aimed for powerful expression of emotion, often revealing their innermost thoughts and feelings. Romantic music can be about love, hate, or death. Romantic composers were often influenced by romantic literature and art

The Rise of Romantic Music • Because of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, aristocrats could no longer afford musical luxuries. • Romantic composers wrote primarily for a middle-class audience • The rise of the middle class led to the formation of many orchestras, opera groups, and subscription concerts. • The piano became a fixture in every middle-class home.

  12. Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4 Tchaikovsky dedicated this symphony to his patroness, Nadezhda von Meck. She would find in it "an echo of his most intimate thoughts and emotions."
