Purpose: To understand what Pandemic Influenza is and what you can do to prepare for the next Pandemic Influenza. Every student should be able to do the following regarding information pertaining to Pandemic Influenza. Objectives: • Analyze how behavior can impact health maintenance and disease prevention. • Develop strategies to improve or maintain personal, family and community health. • Evaluate a personal health assessment to determine strategies for health enhancement and risk reduction. • Analyze how public health policies and government regulations influence health promotion and disease prevention.
TERMS TO KNOW Pandemic: A disease outbreak that spreads rapidly around the world. Influenza: An infection of the lungs caused by a virus that can be passed from person to person. Seasonal Influenza: A common form of influenza that spreads each winter. Avian Influenza: Also called “bird flu.” A type of flu that affects poultry and wild birds.
WHAT IT IS • A pandemic influenza is a new virus that causes a worldwide outbreak. • Pandemic Influenza spreads quickly from one country to another. • A pandemic begins when the new flu virus is easily passed from person to person. • Pandemic influenza is different than seasonal influenza.
PREVIOUS PANDEMIC INFLUENZA OCCURRENCES • “Spanish Flu,” 1918-19: 500,000 people died in the United States, and as many as 50 million died worldwide. • “Asian Flu,” 1957-58: 70,000 deaths in the United States. • “Hong Kong Flu,” 1968-69: 34,000 deaths in the United States.
WHAT TO EXPECT No one knows when the next or how bad the next flu pandemic will be, but everyone should be prepared for the worst: • Large numbers of sick people at hospitals and clinics • Supplies and services will be limited • People may not be able to go to work and have to stay at home • It may take months before a vaccine is developed
WHAT TO EXPECT • A pandemic may last for a long time. 18 months is how long the 1918 flu lasted • Health officials will keep you informed • Traveling may be difficult
The flu virus is spread from person to person when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or touches items that others come in contact with.
WHAT TO DO Here are some helpful tips on what you can do to protect yourself: • Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze • Frequent hand washing • Stay home when you are sick • Learn basic care-giving
