  1. JAMES 4:13-17

  2. Calendar

  3. Planning

  4. Future

  5. James 4:13-17 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— 14 yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.

  6. James 4:13-17 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. 17 So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.

  7. Proverbs 6:6-8 Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! 7It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, 8yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.”

  8. Words from James • It is “HOW” we plan that matters

  9. Luke 12:16-21 “And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain.

  10. Luke 12:16-21 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’ “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’“This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”

  11. We Act foolishly when: • We plan without beginning our plans with prayer.

  12. We Act foolishly when: • We plan without beginning our plans with prayer. • We plan with too much reliance on the plan itself.

  13. We Act foolishly when: • We plan without beginning our plans with prayer. • We plan with too much reliance on the plan itself. • We plan with too much confidence in our own abilities.

  14. James 4:14-15 “yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.”

  15. Our plans are humbled when: • We realize that the future is uncertain.

  16. Our plans are humbled when: • We realize that the future is uncertain. • We remember that our lives are fragile.

  17. Our plans are humbled when: • We realize that the future is uncertain. • We remember that our lives are fragile. • We realize that God is sovereign.

  18. God is in control and we must ACKNOWLEDGE Him and CONSULT Him and SUBMIT to Him as we make our plans.

  19. Psalm 127:1 Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain.

  20. Matthew 6:33 But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

  21. Questions to consider: • Do you pray before you plan? • Do you plan mostly with eternal things in mind or mostly with temporal things in mind? • Do you do things in your own power or do you submit to God’s will and rely on his power and wisdom? • Has today gotten lost in your pursuit for tomorrow?
