  2. Goals • Understand biblical principles regarding a call to the mission field • Understand appropriate standards for missionary applicants • Understand the need for missionary training

  3. Principles of the call • Self consecration - Rom 12:1-2 • According to their gifting • Special Burden for the lost • Desire for the work (Ps 37:4) • Circumstances (Acts 16:7)

  4. Barriers to the Call • Fear • Family (Luke 14:27) • Comfortable life

  5. Appropriate Standards for Missionaries • Strong sense of God’s call • Spiritual Maturity • 1 Tim 3, Titus 1 • Proper Motives • Furitful ministry experience • Perseverence and commitment

  6. Need for Missionary Training • Most believe this is necessary • Church leadership can help train • Topics: • Biblical studies • Cultural studies • Linguistic studies • Mission strategy • Mission history • practical component

  7. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS/ACTION STEPS • Develop a list of missionary qualifications • Develop a list of possible missionaries from their churches. Why are these potential candidates?

  8. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS/ACTION STEPS • After the missions committee is established, work with it and the church to plan a short-term missions trip • Prepare Sermon #5 on the missionary call.
