  3. 1. Hierarchy • Hierarchy: a system or organization in which people or groups are ranked one above the other according to status or authority • How does X-Ray continue to show he is in charge? • stands up for Stanley when Squid teases him

  4. 2. Reward Systems • Create a Venn diagram to show the similarities and differences between the reward systems used by X-Ray and the Warden X-Ray Warden

Clues • The gold tube draws the Warden’s interest • The Warden’s behavior tells us she’s looking for something • reward system • extra water (truck stays there) • greets the boys at breakfast • goes with them to the holes • supervises the job site • loses patience when nothing is found, is around less and eventually takes away privileges (less water, longer hours)
