  2. Understanding media • We need media to communicate our story • Reporters are professionals with a job to do – get a good story • On tight deadlines • Generally try to report both sides (fair, balanced)

  3. Media spokespersons • Only authorized spokespersons can speak on behalf of the Network • Churches should select and authorize spokespersons to speak on behalf of the congregation • Well-informed, well-spoken, gracious, and savvy • Everyone should know who the spokespersons are

  4. Preparing for an interview • If call is unexpected, arrange a call back time • Know what you want to achieve; focus on your audience • List your 1-3 talking points • Think through possible questions • Relax. Adjust your attitude. See opportunity. • Muster prayer support • Create a quiet, uncluttered interview “space”

  5. Ground rules • Everything said to a reporter is “on the record” • Don’t say “no comment”; If you can’t comment, explain why • Never say anything you don’t want to see in the newspaper or hear on TV or on the radio • Don’t repeat negative questions • Don’t use loaded words • Don’t allow words to be put in your mouth

Interview tips • Focus on your 1-3 talking points • “Bridge” from answers to your key point • Don’t be afraid to repeat yourself • Summarize • Use direct, simple answers - Avoid jargon • Support your points with facts & examples • Take your time and don’t be afraid of silence • Watch your body language

  7. Bridging • Bridging options • Answer question briefly, then bridge • Bridge immediately • Examples of bridging to key points • “The important thing to remember is… ” • “The real issue here is …” • “I don’t know about that, but I do know that …” • “That’s false. But what is true is …”
