  2. Ritual Environment Access Dialogue The 4 Keys to Cultivating Lifelong Readers

  3. Ritual • Create routines around reading, every day • Forge reading and writing to inspire and motivate • Read aloud • Create odd times such as seven minutes or nineteen minutes for reading • independently

  4. Protect Time

  5. Environment • Be open to environments unique to individual readers • Create a comfortable space for reading – no matter what that means • Get rid of distractions before they become distracting • Pay attention to changing preferences

  6. Stand Up and Read?

  7. Access • Provide genre balance • 40% nonfiction, 20% poetry, 40% fiction • Provide multiple texts at independent reading levels • Provide opportunity for multi-media conversation and connections • It’s a user generated world

  8. Dialogue • Engage in conversations around what your boys are reading • This is part of forming a reading identity and connecting with others through shared text • Celebrate uniqueness, celebrate accomplishments • Encourage the boys to be curators of their own reading experiences
