  2. Background (1) • There was a civil war between the northern and southern governments of Sudan. • The government military burned villages which caused 17,000 plus boys to flee their homes.

  3. Background (2) • The boys lost their families. • Moms and sisters were raped or sold into slavery. • Dads were murdered. • With all the devastation the boys were left emotional.

  4. Background (3) • In 2001 the United States government, the International Rescue Committee, the Catholic Charities and the Alliance for African Assistance let about 3,600 'lost boys' fly to different cities around America.

  5. Refugee Camp (1) • It was a refugee camp in Kenya where people in America found out. They flew to Africa to find out more. • CNN people talk to the ‘lost boys’ about their living conditions.

  6. Refugee Camp (2) • Their long journey took them through Africa to Ethiopia, refugee camps in Kenya and to Sudan . • The lost boys journey left them being exhausted and injured. • They were also left hungry, and thirsty from thier long walk away from the villages.

  7. Malek Deng • Malek Deng was born in a village called ThurKuol in the Bahr al-Gazal region in southwestern Sudan.

  8. Malek Deng (turnout) • After all those years of torture and agony Malek Deng is now a medical technician in his 30's who lives in Phoenix. • He tells people what happens but he now has proof.
