You must meet the following: • Be in good health • 20-55 years of age • Native speaker of English • Not a Chinese National (no Chinese passport) • Experience working with youth • Friendly, flexible, fun • Courteous and respectful Candidate Minimum Qualifications Successful candidates should have a minimum of high school diploma or GED, completion of freshman English with a 2.5 or higher, completion of at least 12 college credits at any higher education institution in Washington State within the past year with a 2.5 or higher . TESL/MA TESL certificate and degree holders as well as any candidates with a bachelor’s degree will receive higher salaries than indicated in this presentation which is geared to community college students.

  6. Orientation and Training During the first 7-10 days in China, you will receive orientation in Yangshuo, near Guilin. Then, within a week or so you will be sent to your school. In most cases, there will be 2 foreign teachers per school. • TOPICS: • Chinese laws and culture • Culture shock • Teaching methods and strategies for • Chinese students • Chinese classroom culture and management • Lesson planning • Class  activities • Teaching demonstration, practice and • observation • Prevention and resolutions for problems you • may have • Basic Mandarin

  7. Classroom preparation + teaching • 15 hrs week in classroom, Mon-Fri 20 teaching periods x 45 min lessons • English Corner, conversation practice for 2 additional hours/week • Additional instruction is paid at 100 yuan/hour Teaching Expectations

Private apartment or with one roommate (another foreign teacher, same sex or your friend) • 200 yuan stipend toward utilities (usually covers) • Apartment includes basic furniture, bedding, washing machine, internet access, TV, air conditioner, kitchen basics (fridge, microwave, hot plate, pots/pans, utensils) • Meals are usually available at school for minimal cost Housing & Meals

  10. 4,500 yuan/month ($735); may be higher depending on your qualifications • 4,000 yuan airfare stipend and paid upon completion of semester or Buckland will pay your airfare from Seattle-Guilin • Fully furnished apartment • 200 yuan ($32) toward utilities • Paid national holidays • 15 paid sick days with doctor’s letter • Bicycle usage • Chinese lessons once/week Compensation

Your Costs Transportation to Guilin from USA (fly to Hong Kong, cross border and take train or plane; fly to Shanghai and then fly to Guilin): Varies Initial visa fee for entering China (you will pay this to the Chinese embassy when applying for the visa): ~$140 Fee may vary based on your college degree status. 280 yuan for physical upon arrival: $44 Food /Housing: 50 yuan/day or $7.50 in Yangshuo, paid from the first day you arrive at Yangshuo until the date you leave for the school site: $50-$75 Transportation to the school site: $30-$225. (This cost will be reimbursed upon your arrival at the school) Medical Insurance, purchased upon receiving contract: $28

Getting to Guilin • Air: • The airfare from the USA or Hong Kong to Guilin is always much more expensive than flying from a Chinese city like Shanghai , Guangzhou or Shenzhen. • We recommend flying to China first and then get a separate flight to Guilin. • By train: • From Shenzhen or Shanghai there are frequent trains to Guilin. • Get a sleeper car! • By bus: • You can also travel to Guilin from Shenzhen by bus. After arriving in Shenzhen, take a taxi to the Yin Hu (means Silver Lake) bus station. There are direct express buses to Guilin every 2 or 3 hours. The bus ticket is around 30-35 US dollars/ person. Tell the driver to let you out at Yangshuo which is before Guilin. The express bus will take 10-12 hours. Travel at night on the sleeper bus for an interesting experience. • Buckland will pick you up from the airport, bus, or train station!

  13. Apply Now! Applications are available in the International Programs offices of the Seattle Community Colleges-- or online through the District website. www.seattlecolleges.edu/teachinchina Applications received from now through final deadline of Dec 15 or June 15 for February or September start. Participants need a passport valid for at least one year from the semester state date in China. Application fee of $50 (payable to Seattle Community Colleges)

After you apply… • We will be screening applications for Buckland Group. • Buckland Group will make all final hiring decisions. • Contracts will be offered/accepted directly between you and Buckland Group. • We are here to help with any travel questions you have or advice you need! • Attend a mandatory pre-departure • orientation in Seattle, including Living in • China and Intro to Teaching • Conversational English
