  4. QUESTIONS OVER THE READING (Section 19.3) 1. List 4 ways in which entropy of a system increases 2. Is the entropy of these 2 reactions increasing or decreasing? 2H2(g) + O2(g)  2H2O(l) H2O(s)  H2O(g) • What does it mean if the ΔS of a reaction is positive? (Is entropy increasing or decreasing) 4. Is the following reaction spontaneous or not? 2Na + Cl2 2NaCl ΔG = -768.0 kJ

  5. IS A REACTION SPONTANEOUS OR NOT? ΔG is determined by ΔH and ΔS • Always Spontaneous: • ΔH = - (exothermic) and ΔS = + (increasing) • Never Spontaneous: • ΔH = + (endothermic) and ΔS = - (decreasing) • Sometimes sponaneous: • ΔH = - (exothermic) and ΔS = - (decreasing), spontaneous at low temps • ΔH = + (endothermic) and ΔS = + (increasing), spontaneous at high temps
