  1. In what ways are all these people different?

  2. Make an inference. What might be some other differences these people have other than just physical differences?

  3. Not only do these people look different, they probably have different... languages history religions geography governments art These are Culture Traits, or elements of culture. economies

  4. These traits make up your culture. A region that shares similar culture traits is called a culture region.

  5. Culture is... A learned system of shared beliefs and ways of doing things that guide a person’s daily behavior. There are many cultures all over the world.

  6. When people from different cultures live in the same region, the region is described as multicultural. Multicultural society is defined as a mixture of different cultures within the same region or country. Is the United States a multicultural society?

  7. Sometimes culture traits spread from one society to another. This is know as Cultural Diffusion. A McDonald’s in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

  8. Think of world cultures as many rivers. Rivers sometimes flow into each other. This is called aconfluence, or flowing into one another. Cultures do the same thing. Many cultures co-exist in all regions of the world.

  9. There is a confluence of cultures in our world. Sometimes these cultures exist peacefully known as cooperation, …and sometimes they come into conflict. What are some examples of Cooperation? Conflict?

  10. The Middle East is one area where several cultures exist because... the Middle East spans parts of Europe, Africa and Asia. Christianity, Islam, and Judaism all have their roots in the Middle East. most people in the Middle East are either Arabic or Jewish.

  11. The tiny country of Israel is an area of much conflict. Unfortunately, the cultures in the Middle East come into conflict quite often. There are 3 main reasons for conflict in the Middle East, and especially in Israel.

  12. Religion Conflict #1 The Middle East is the birthplace of three main world religions. Judaism As you will see, this confluence can cause conflict in this region. Christianity Islam

  13. History Conflict #2 Historically, Israel has been part Arabic... and part Jewish. Both groups feel they should rightfully control the land today.

  14. Resources Conflict #3 The Middle East has two resources that are very important: Oil- which is plentiful and needed the world over, and.. Water - which is scarce because the Middle East is mostly desert.

  15. Competition for oil and water causes many conflicts in the Middle East.

  16. Bringing stability and peace to the Middle East is a great challenge that affects cultures throughout the world.

  17. Many cultures are affected by Middle Eastern events because... we are allinterdependent. What happens in one area of the world impacts other regions. In this unit we will be studying how cultures interact.

  18. This interaction between cultures is called cultural relationships .

  19. So what do I need to know about culture and cultural relationships? What are the enduring understandings?

  20. Culture is defined by interactions among complex factors.
