  2. The Galley • The food was cooked in the Galley and the fire used wood or coal. • The crew ate at the Mess table, between the guns. • They ate a variety of food for a high protein diet. • They ate Burgoo (porridge), salted meat, fish, peas, rice, butter, cheese and biscuits.

  3. The Crew • It was important the crew remained strong and healthy. • They had to do a lot of pulling and lifting work around the ship. • They had one hot meal and two cold meals a day. • Search the Gallery

  4. The Wooden Tankard • Fresh water was very precious and stored in casks. • The Galley had a water condenser which produced some fresh water. • They drank beer, wine or rum. • The fresh water was of poor quality.

The gun was served by a six man crew. 1,was the Gun Captain who aimed and fired the gun. 2,used a long spike to turn and raise the barrel. 3,loaded the gun and rammed the shot and powder home. 4, sponged out the gun, ensuring that no burning powder or waste was left to cause premature ignition of the new charge. 5, worked opposite 2 to move the gun. 6,was the smallest and youngest member of the crew - the powder monkey. Often young boys, perhaps only 10 or 12 years old, the powder monkey collected the gunpowder charges from the magazine deep in the hold of the ship and carried it to the gun. Action Stations Crew
