  1. The Atom Chem 332 – O’Dette

  2. Identifies an element nucleus proton + 1 Provide atomic stability nucleus 1 neutron 0 Determines reactivity electron cloud 0 + electron

  3. Amu • Atomic Mass Unit (amu) = based off the carbon atom • Unit used to measure mass of atoms • Where each proton = 1 amu & neutron = 1 amu • Unit on the periodic table

  4. Atomic number (A#) Atomic number • Definition: # of protons in a element • Found on the periodic table • Unique to individual elements; NEVER CHANGES!!!!! • In a neutral element: # protons = # electrons 7 N 14.007

  5. Mass number (M#) • Defn: mass of the atom • Found by adding # of protons and # of neutrons • Represents the number of particles in the nucleus • This is NOT the number on the periodic table!!!!

  6. Example • oxygen atom with mass number of 16 (neutral) A# = #p+ = M# = #n0 = #e- = Always the same 8 8 16 (p+ + n0) 8 8 (neutral)
