  1. Welcome to Curriculum Night. We hope to give you a snapshot of what your child is expected to learn in second grade. If you have specific questions pertaining to your student, please feel free to set up a time to meet.

  2. What are we doing to ensure our students are future ready? Type overview of classroom procedures here... • Goal setting • What are the behaviors of a learner? Thinking skills, problem solving, real world application, responsible use of technology. • Rubrics for student to self assess in order for students to be responsible for their own learning. • Workshop model that allows student conversations to reinforce a deep understanding of concepts taught.

  3. How will your student receive support to ensure success? • Small Group instruction in every workshop • Teacher – Student conferencing and goal setting • Tuesday/Thursday tutoring for students requiring additional instruction • Specialized Curriculum Nights

  4. Communication • 2nd Grade Website – Newsletter, Important dates, 2nd grade expectations • Teacher Website-Examples of student work, strategies, what is going on in class, ideas to help at home, schedule • Email – Sent at the end of each week with an attached newsletter • Let’s set up Remind 101! – Allows you to receive a text message with brief information. You must sign up to receive the text messages and you cannot text back.   5. Speed to Read What is it? This is a school-wide reading incentive program. Every student has a reading goal. There are specific guidelines for every grade level about how to log and count books. How will we document our books? Every child has a reading log that stays in their binder. It should go home with them each day and come back to school. Teachers will work with students to be sure they are choosing books that are “JUST RIGHT” for them to read. Students will be setting goals and bringing those home soon.

  6. Speed to Read Why participate? There are many great incentives for students who reach their reading goal. There are additional prizes for the K-2 student and the 3-5 student who read the most book. There are also classroom and school-wide prizes for most books read. Guidelines: Log books read at home and at school even books that you are re-reading 2nd Grade will be setting picture book goals; however students may also read and log chapter books. These will count for 4 picture books.

  7. Sample Math Questions You go to a shop that sells tricycles and bicycles. There are 36 wheels in the store. How many bicycles and tricycles could there be? Not just one correct answer Deeper levels of thinking Different ways to solve

  8. How will my child be held accountable? Students will be recording their ideas, practicing new strategies and taking notes in journals during lessons. These journals will be a discussion point during student/teacher conferences for the purposes of students demonstrating their efforts to practice new strategies and for goal setting. Journals primarily remain at school. If you are interested in viewing your child’s journal you are welcome anytime. Learning Behaviors: stand and command, attentive listening, speaking in complete sentences, solo time, and maintaining a good learning posture.

  10. Homework Spelling: Practice spelling words: see teacher website for ideas. Spelling tests begin this Friday. Math: Math homework will begin going home next week. Read, read, read

  11. Each week, your child’s spelling test will consist of 10 words on the specific vowel sound or spelling rule and 2 questions using the grammar skill of the week. You can find spelling and grammar on the newsletter that is sent out each week as well as on your language arts teacher’s webpage under spelling.

  12. How Can You Help at Home? • We expect your child to read daily for a total of at least 100 minutes a week. • Your child will be filling out a reading log daily (at home and at school) • This reading time is critical with the stamina needed for state testing. • Help your child study spelling words weekly. (website) • Practice addition facts daily to increase fact fluency. • Practice telling time using clocks around the house. • Practice counting money. Have them count change maybe their allowance. • Talking to your child about what they know about a number. Type overview of homework assignments here...

  13. Dismissal The dismissal process begins when the bell rings at 2:45. All students go to their lockers at that time. Students are then escorted to their dismissal location by one of the grade level teachers. Walkers and bike riders should be exiting the building by 3:00. If your child is a car rider, the person that picks them up in the back MUST HAVE A CAR TAG printed by our front office. If you need a car tag for yourself or someone else that has permission to pick up your child, please contact your child’s teacher as soon as possible. Drivers without car tags will be asked to go to the front office to show identification before picking up their child.
