The Beginning • Went to Bowdoin College and studied English and Latin. • Decided to be a writer at Bowdoin College. • In his mid-twenties he had dozens of rejected manuscripts.
Fanshawe • This was a self-published novel. • The book was a commercial failure. • It sold so little copies that he burned what he had not sold. • He never acknowledged that it was one of his own books. • Today it is worth thousands of dollars.
Boston Custom-House • In eighteen thirty-nine he got a job at the Boston Custom-House as a weigher and gauger. • He took this job because he did not make enough money as a writer. • He was dismissed three years later.
More Writing • By gathering together many of his stories he successfully published them under the title of Twice-Told Tales. • The book had marginal sales. • In 1842, his writings made him enough money to marry Sophia Peabody.
Surveyor • Appointed by president James Polk to the surveyor of Boston Custom-House. • He was dismissed by Zachary Tailor. • There he wrote the Scarlet Letter.
The Scarlet Letter • The book became a enormous success. • He published it at age forty-six. • The Scarlet Letter sold five thousand copies in only ten days. • Finally after thirty-two years he was a success.
Other Works • In five months he wrote the House of Seven Gables, which happened to be another tremendous success. • Next, in 1852 he published the Blithedale Romance. • He wrote five successful books in three years.
Unfinished Projects • In 1872 -1883, four of his unfinished novel became known. • Septimius Felton. • The Dolliver Romance. • Dr. Grimshawe’s Secret. • The Ancestral Footstep.
