Chapter 2 The World of Earth Science
Lesson 1 • There are 4 areas of Earth Science. • Geology • Oceanography • Meteorology • Astronomy
Lesson 1 • Oceanography is the study of the sea. • Biological oceanographers study plants and animals that live in the ocean.
Lesson 1 • Meteorology is the study of Earth’s atmosphere in relation to weather and climate.
Lesson 1 • Geology is the study of the history and structure of the Earth and the processes that shape it.
Lesson 1 • The most familiar star in the universe is the sun. • The sun is the closest star to Earth. • Astronomers have studied the sun more than other stars.
Lesson 1 • Three Earth Science careers are seismologist, meteorologist, astronomer. There are others. • Environmental science is the study of how humans interact in the environment.
Lesson 1 • Ecology is the study of relationships between organisms and their surroundings. • Geochemistry combines the study of geology and chemistry.
Lesson 1 • Astronomy is the study of the universe. • Astronomers study stars, asteroids, planets, and everything in space.
Lesson 1 • Stalagmites and Stalactites are formations that are formed from minerals in water that drips in air-filled caves.
Lesson 2 • “Test the Hypothesis” is the 3rd step in the Scientific Method and it’s also the step scientists use a controlled experiment.
Lesson 2 • Scientists should use scientific data to support their findings, not opinions. • Scientists use tables and graphs to organize and summarize their data.
Lesson 3 • Three types of scientific models are: • Physical • Mathematical • Conceptual
Lesson 3 • A Climate Model is a type of Mathematical Model using variables and computers to process the data.
Lesson 3 • A Conceptual Model is used for understanding a System of Ideas.
Lesson 4 • Meter is a good unit to use when measuring length. • Liter is a good unit to use when measuring volume. • Gram is a good unit to use when measuring mass.
Lesson 4 • Water freezes at 0°C and 32°F.
