  3. Personal Profile Name: Ita Clare Buttrose Age: 71years old Birthday: 17/1/1942 Place Of Birth: Potts Point NSW Important Events: When she became the founding editor of Cleo magazine, Woman’s Weekly, and was the first woman to be an editor for Australian Newspapers.

  4. Why did she become Australian of the year Ita Buttrose is the Australian of the year for 2013!! She was recognised for her outstanding career in media. Not only that she uses her national profile for raising the awareness for breast cancer and prostate cancer.

  5. Achievements • She started her career working for Woman's Weekly as a copy girl. • At 23 she was given the job as a woman's editor at The Telegraph. • In 1971 she was promoted to the founding editor of the new woman's magazine called Cleo.

  6. More achievements • In 1974 she became editor of Woman's Weekly. • In 1989 she was the first woman to be an editor for Australian Newspapers. • In 2011 she became the National President of Alzheimer’s Australia and Vice President Emeritus of Arthritis Australia.

Akram Azimi became Young Australian of the Year because he is a dedicated mentor to young indigenous people. 13 years ago he left Afghanistan to come and live in Australia, and he went from being a refugee kid to become one of his school’s best student. He is now at the University of Western Australia studying law, science and arts.

Why She became the young Australian of the year 2012 Marita Cheng became Young Australian of the Year in 2012 because she demonstrated vision in leadership and is dedicated to encouraging young woman to be interested in a career in engineering. She would like to study for a Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Computer Science. She plans to start a robotics company where she will create robots that will do everyday tasks.

Achievements • She founded Robo Gals in 2008 which is an international student-run organisation that introduces young woman to technology and engineering. • She changed the way girls see engineering and technology . • She has a Nancy Fairfax Churchill Fellowship, International Youth Foundation, Youth ActionNet Fellowship and an Anita Borg Change Agent Award. • She was a former panellist on ABC T.V’s news Inventors program.
