State Definition of Gifted “Gifted and talented student” means a child or youth who performs at or shows the potential for performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment and who: (1) exhibits high performance capability in an intellectual, creative, or artistic area; (2) possesses an unusual capacity for leadership; or (3) excels in a specific academic field. 20. 1st Grade Stewardship in the Global World: First grade students will focus on how living things depend on other living things and their non-living surroundings in order to survive. Emphasis will be placed on we adapt, make an impact and take care of the world around us. Revised August 2014

21. 2nd Grade Going Extreme with S.T.E.A.M. The 2nd grade curriculum engages students in working as engineers to collaboratively solve problems (missions) while incorporating STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) into each learning experience. Revised August 2014

22. 3rd Grade Structures and the Art of Architecture Third graders will explore ways in which engineers and architects use their knowledge to design, build, and test structures using their problem solving skills to find the best solutions for our future. Revised August 2014

23. 4th Grade Let’s Get Civilized! Students will develop an understanding of our past and the contributions made by ancient civilizations. They will explore how these contributions have shaped our world today and apply their knowledge to work as teams of engineers to design and create a “civilized” theme park. . Revised August 2014

24. 5th Grade Global Innovations for Our Future Students will be engaged in learning experiences to develop new and innovative solutions for our future. Bottom line… • We will make sure that gifted children’s needs are being addressed EVERY DAY. • We will make sure that appropriate lessons (differentiated, respectful tasks, tiered, compacted, engaging) are provided. • We will challenge our gifted students with dignity and respect. • We will honor and cherish their differences, from their classmates & from each other. • We will NOT have a “One Size Fits All” program.
