2. Description of Program QHS started using the HRW text in the fall of 2002
Used in all Geometry classes as of fall 2004
Teachers met to select text and again to determine curricula
Goal of attained curriculum imbedded within intended and implemented curricula
3. HRW Text Selection Criteria Interactive student activities for most lessons
Abundant teacher resources
Lesson plans and resources on CD-ROM
Alignment with district, state, and national math standards
4. Evaluation Questions How does the geometry class compare to students expectations of geometry prior to taking the class?
How do students feel about the class activities and do the activities help the learning process?
Does the new text and supplemental material help the teachers plan for their class? Which parts of the supplemental materials do they use and why? Why dont they use other parts of the materials? Do they use the CD planner, the PowerPoint slides, or the test generator?
Do teachers use the Geometers Sketchpad interface and if so, how often? If not, why dont they use the Geometers Sketchpad interface?
How well does the geometry text meet the NCTM 9-12 geometry standards?
5. Instruments & Participants Student Surveys
Teacher Surveys
6. Student Surveys Participation requested by not required of 87 geometry students in 3 classes
Response rate: nearly 90% or 78 students completed surveys during geometry class
Quantitative questions of course expectations and class activities
Qualitative questions for more details of above
7. Teacher Surveys Participation requested of 8 teachers who taught or currently teach HRW Geometry
Response rate: 37.5% or only 3 teachers returned the completed survey
Quantitative questions on taught chapters and use of supplemental materials
Additional comments section
8. Data Analysis Paper surveys were conducted in class
Quantitative responses were coded into MS Excel
MS Excel charts used to display data results
Qualitative responses summarized
9. Student Results - Expectations Difficult to measure pre-course expectations this far into the semester
Students recorded their class expectations but many of the things we have done in class were noted as expected
Student comments indicated the class is as expected for most students
Many students noted that geometry is difficult but they expected the class to be more difficult
10. ExpectationsOver 78% Responses
11. Expectations 70% - 76% Responses
12. Expectations 64% - 69% Responses
13. Expectations 28% - 56% Responses
14. Expectations Less Than 11% Responses
15. Student Results Class Activities Overall the activities seem to be a success
Over 90% like the activities
Over 80% feel that the activities provide useful notes and help with homework
Just over 50% can find answers to the activities in the book
The activities require the students to do the activity to answer the questions rather than find answers in the book
16. I like the class activities.91% Agree or Strongly Agree
17. The class activities are easy to understand.78% Agree or Strongly Agree
18. The book provides enough assistance with the class activities.56% Agree or Strongly Agree
19. I can find answers to the class activity questions in the book.58% Agree or Strongly Agree
20. There is enough time in class to complete the class activities.82% Agree or Strongly Agree
21. I always complete the class activities.75% Agree or Strongly Agree
22. The class activities provide me with useful notes.83% Agree or Strongly Agree
23. The class activities help me understand the homework.84% Agree or Strongly Agree
24. Teacher ResultsTaught Curriculum Difficult to assess with low response rate
Teachers seem to be consistent with what is covered during the year
Teach all of chapters 1-7 with very few exclusions
Teach parts of chapters 8 & 10
25. Teacher ResultsSupplemental Materials Very useful materials: book problems
Useful: worksheets AB&C, lesson openers, quiz worksheets, test worksheets, dynamic test generator
Somewhat useful: class activities, warm-ups, daily quizzes, practice worksheets, CD planner
Not very useful or do not use: writing resources, long term projects, PowerPoint slides, lesson plans, absent student resources, Geometers Sketchpad
26. Teacher ResultsReasons Materials Not Used PowerPoint slides are not used because it is too difficult to schedule lab time
Geometers Sketchpad is not used because it is too difficult to schedule lab time and because there is not enough class time to complete the activities
27. Recommendations Use more class activities.
Students like activities and find them useful for notes and homework
Teachers only find activities somewhat useful and sometimes difficult to administer
Mix book assignments with worksheets
Students do not like the heavy book
Train new teachers on dynamic test generator and Geometers sketchpad
New teacher does not use test generator
Keep communication open between teachers
School reorganization moved math teachers to separate hallways
