Computing Resources • Physics • Unix : 13 Alpha + 3 HP + 5 Linux + 2 Sun • Oldest machines stopped (3 Alpha + 3 HP) • VMS : 1 Alpha + 1 Vaxstation • End of support with LEP end of life ? • Electronic CAD : 12 Sun Cadence • Evaluating LSF use • Mechanic CAD : 5 Alpha/Unix Euclid • Should move to Catia (IBM? NT?) LAL Site Report - HEPix - JLab 2000
Desktop • 150 X terminals • No significant decrease yet • Microcomputers • 100 Macs • No increase but renewal • >130 PC • Only NT supported, pressure for Linux (lowering) • more and more used by physicists LAL Site Report - HEPix - JLab 2000
PC Installation and Management • Began to move to W2000 • New PCs installed with 2000 • NT domain moved to ActiveDirectory • Using group policies to enforce standard config • SMS used for massive updates • 120 PC registered • 70% NT, 15% W2K, 8% W95, 7% W98 • Virus signature periodic update and SP • No solution (yet?) for Mac... LAL Site Report - HEPix - JLab 2000
Linux Installation • LAL uses Red Hat • 6.1 in production, plan to move to 6.2 or 7.0 • Linux on desktop • Not supported except for notebooks • NFS filesystems not exported • Automatic installation working (Kixstart) • Pressure is lowering… • vmware offers an attractive alternative LAL Site Report - HEPix - JLab 2000
PC Hardware Packaging • Space begins to be a problem for us • Should buy 10 more PCs (server) shortly • Current tower packaging not convenient • Look at 1U rackable PCs (dual CPU) • Few vendors • IBM seems the leader • Significantly more expensive : #50% • Any experiences ? LAL Site Report - HEPix - JLab 2000
Mail Clients : Classical • Execmail/Simeon is dead but still used • Netscape/Outlook still not supported • Replacing by Mulberry from Cyrusoft • Mac / Wxx / Unix • Supports IMSP and ACAP • Preferences and AB on server • Same AB as Execmail • Support LDAP for readonly AB • Advanced disconnected mode LAL Site Report - HEPix - JLab 2000
Mail Clients : Web Access • Silkymail from Cyrusoft, Mulberry editor • Free, based on IMP, written in PHP (servlet) • http://www.cyrusoft.com • Many advanced features • LDAP, AB searching, Mailbox browser • Support IMSP, ACAP coming • Preferences and AB on server • AB common with Mulberry and Execmail LAL Site Report - HEPix - JLab 2000
Metaframe / Wincenter • Remains a crucial service • Growing number of simultaneous users • Plan to start a second machine soon • Move to W2000 based Metaframe • Probably implement load balancing • Move from X11 on Metaframe to ICA clients on Unix LAL Site Report - HEPix - JLab 2000
