To recognize the see-saw effect of various leaders during the Restoration & Glorious Revolution
To acknowledge that our Canadian Charter of Rights was influenced by republican thinking in the Bill of Rights of 1689.

Became Lord Protector (read: DICTATOR) of England after Charles execution
Hated Catholics, enforced Blue Laws restricting Christmas, dancing, gambling, (you get the picture)
Died in 1658, body exhumed 2 years later by Charles II & hung up for display as a warning.
