  3. Lesson Objectives Learning how the Incas developed and created their great empire. Exploring what the Incan civilization was really like. Finding out how the descendents of the Incas live today.

  4. Terms and Places to Know Cuzco The capital of the Incan empire. Census The official count of all the people that live in an area. Topa Inca The ruling emperor of the Incas who was successful in expanding their empire.

  5. Quipus or khipus (sometimes called talking knots) were recording devices used in the Inca Empire and its predecessor societies in the Andean region. A quipu usually consisted of colored, spun, and plied thread or strings from llama or alpaca hair. It could also be made of cotton cords. The cords contained numeric and other values encoded by knots in a base ten positional system.

  7. The Inca people began as a tribe of the Killke culture in the Cuzco area around the 12th century AD. Under the leadership of Manco Capac, they formed the small city-state of Cuzco (QuechuaQosqo).

  12. Answers • They lived along the western coast of South America from Ecuador to Chile. • The name “Inca” came from one of their leaders with that name. • The Incas recorded information on quipus.

  13. 4) The highest and most important god to the Incas was the Sun God. 5) The Spanish leader responsible for the death of an Inca leader and defeat of his empire was Pizzaro.
