  1. REFRIGERATED CARGO SHIPS

  2. Reefer vessels, also known as reefer ships, are refrigerated cargo ships used for transporting perishables, like foodstuffs. Reefer / container vessel

  3. Methods of refrigeration Why refrigerate? • to prolong “practical shelf life”, • the humidity inside the containers can be increased any weight loss is minimised, • temperature is the most important factor when prolonging the shelf life. • CO2 and ethylene (especially high in apples, peaches, apricots, avocados) can deteriorate the commodities these gasses are removed and replaced with fresh air through the ventilation system.

  4. Stowage of refrigerated cargo • Chilled meat is hung from the strengthened deck stiffening members. • ‘tween deck height is arranged to provide space below e.g the hung meat for the circulation of air. • Frozen meat is stacked in the holds. • Fruits and vegetables are stowed in a manner that permits a flow of air around, e.g. crates.

  5. Refrigeration system on board • Brine (water with salt in it) will have a freezing point below the desired temperatures of the refrigerated compartments. • The brine absorbs / takes heat from the compartments and returns to the evaporator where it is cooled again and recirculated. • Air must be circulating where fruit is carried. • It disperses carbon dioxide gas produced by ripening fruit.

  6. Refrigerated and insulated containers are mainly available as 20 foot (20') & 40 foot (40') containers. 20 feet (6.058m), 40 feet (12.192m) Essential for: • the smaller the quantity of heat allowed into the cargo space, the smaller the load for the refrigerating machinery, • without insulation it would be impossible to maintain a constant temperature, • in case of a temporary breakdown in the refrigerating machinery, the insulation slows down the temperature rise, and consequently reduces the risk of damage to cargo, • different temperature of the sea – the hull in way of the cargo holds is extensively insulated. • Some insulation materials: cork, glass wool, polyurethane.
