  3. Developing the Administrative Team The Superintendent needs to form and develop the administrative team before student achievement can be maximized.

Developing the Administrative Team • Ensure that student achievement is a common theme aligned throughout the District • The goals for administrators and teachers should be aligned with the Board goals • The NCLB Plan, Technology Plan, District Improvement Plan and School Improvement Plans should be aligned with the Board goals

Developing the Administrative Team • Hire the correct people as administrators • Promote qualified internal people, but bring in others to complement the team • Before you make the final offer, have a confidential talk with the candidate to make sure he/she understands your unwritten expectations

Developing the Administrative Team • Set high expectations and make sure your administrators understand what you want them to do • Some expectations and goals should be formalized in their goals for evaluation • Student achievement should be discussed at every administrator meeting and ideas shared about what schools are doing to improve • District 80 examples …

Developing the Administrative Team • Provide your administrators the support and resources to accomplish what you expect them to do • Promote meetings among them to share and learn from each other • Allow them flexibility to meet their goals, but insist on being kept informed and retain the right to make recommendations to modify their ideas • Provide them a budget they can control, expect them to operate within it, but be prepared to support additional funding in unique instances

Developing the Administrative Team • Recognize your administrators for their efforts and accomplishments • During building walk-through visits, verbally compliment them on things you see that support student achievement • Send notes or emails when you see or hear about something that should be acknowledged

Safety and Security • Developed computerized integrated security training for Casey Middle School • Re-trained School Safety Committee • Developed district-wide school safety and security audit • Developed district-wide school facility assessment checklist • Reviewed District Safety Operational Procedures (Admin. Reg. 465.12) • Upgraded video surveillance equipment in Hall building • Purchased new radios, upgraded base stations, purchased new batteries for older hand-held units • Two campus-wide security walkthroughs with the following team (scheduled for October 2008 and April 2009) • Mount Vernon Police Department • Mount Vernon Fire Department • Litton Ambulance Service • Code Red drill (scheduled October 2008 and April 2009)
