Course Objectives After completing the course, the learners are expected to be able to demonstrate the following with an avalanche beacon: • Identify situations for use • List benefits • Describe key features • Describe how to configure • Describe steps of operation • Describe handling and storage

  3. ABCD • Audience: Anyone who wants to use an avalanche beacon when traveling in the backcountry in snow covered areas, including but not limited to backcountry skiers and snowboarders, snowmobilers, snow-shoers, ice-climbers, mountaineers

ABCD • Behavior: • Draw a comprehensive Concept Map with meaningful relationships between the nodes • Demonstrate successful beacon operation in virtually simulated avalanche scenario(s) • Name meaningful terms and relationships during a “think-aloud” exercise • Identify appropriate actions in similar settings given in multiple-choice format • Describe appropriate actions in similar settings given in essay-test format

  5. ABCD • Conditions: Learners will need the following equipment for taking this course: • Computer with Internet connection • Network bandwidth of 1.54Mbps or greater • Sound card

ABCD • Degree: • Time limit: learners’ performance time will be measured in avalanche simulation scenarios • Range of Accuracy: learners will be tested on the accuracy of their locating the buried beacon in simulated scenarios as well as their answers to essay questions • Proportion of correct responses to multiple choice questions in addition to correct nodes and relationships drawn in their concept maps will be measured • Qualitative standards: we are expecting a gradual progress in the quality of learners’ performance in simulated scenarios, think-aloud exercises, and essay answers
