Rutherford B. Hayes: The 19th President's Journey from Civil War Hero to Political Reformer
Rutherford B. Hayes, born on October 4, 1822, in Delaware, Ohio, served as the 19th President of the United States from 1877 to 1881. Known as the "Dark-Horse President," he was a Republican who famously lost the popular vote but won the presidency in a contested election. A Civil War veteran, Hayes promoted education and social reforms during his tenure. He married Lucy Webb, the first presidential wife to graduate from college. After leaving office, he continued advocating for veterans and educational improvements until his passing in 1893.
