Who is required to pass the performance review requirement? • Teachers whose Initial certification became valid onSeptember 1, 2006 or later must meet the performance review requirement. • Timeline • Submit two performance reviews within two years from issue date of Initial certificate • Pass two performance reviews within three years from issue date of Initial certificate 2

  3. Who can elect to use the performance review requirement? • Teachers who wish to • Move to Master certification • Renew Master certification • Earn highly qualified status (HOUSSE) • Earn Public Recognition 3

  4. Passing the Performance Review Requirement • Initial to Professional, HOUSSE, & Public Recognition • Complete two performance reviews with a proficient score of 2 or above on each performance standard • Master • Complete two performance reviews with an advanced score of 3 or above on each performance standard 4

  5. What is the Alaska Teacher Performance Review? • Based on Alaska’s Teacher Performance Standards • Each performance review consists of: • One 45-minute videotape of classroom instruction • Supporting Documentation which sets the context for the instruction presented on the videotape 5

  6. The Performance Standards • Planning and Preparation • Draws from a wide repertoire of strategies, including the use of technology, when appropriate • Organizes instruction based on characteristics of students and the goals of the lesson 6

  7. The Performance Standards • Environment for Learning: • Communicates high expectations and clear standards for students • Manages the classroom to maintain an engaging, inclusive, and safe learning community in which all students can learn 7

Preparing & Submitting a Performance Review • Step 3 • Gather the Video & Audio Equipment • Determine the best location for the equipment in your classroom • Consider recruiting a camera operator • Increase the comfort level of you and your students by videotaping your class prior to the actual performance review 15

Step 9 Complete unfinished items on checklist Application cover page with signatures Copy of photo ID Label, rewind, and lock videotape Include $25, if applicable Securely package videotape and documents. Damaged videotapes will not be scored Make a copy of all documents & the videotape Use a tracking slip when you mail your performance review, so you can verify delivery to Teacher Certification Preparing & Submitting a Performance Review 19

Preparing & Submitting a Performance Review • Step 10 • Send your performance review to: Teacher Certification Alaska Department of Education & Early Development 801 West 10th Street, Suite 200 P.O. Box 110500 Juneau, AK 99811-0500 • A complete performance review includes: application cover sheet, ID page, supporting documentation, videotape, performance review checklist and applicable fees. 20

  21. What happens next? • Your performance review will be scored by trained reviewers who are classroom teachers from rural & urban Alaska • When the review is complete, you will be notified via email & USPS of your scores. (If your address changes, please notify Teacher Certification at tcwebmail@alaska.gov ) 21

  22. What happens to my performance review? • Your videotape will be returned 90 days after you receive notification of your scores. • Your documentation will not be return. A copy of your scores and your documentation will become part of your certification file. 22

  23. What happens if I do not score proficient on a submitted performance review? • You may submit as many performance reviews as necessary to satisfy the performance review requirement. • If your Initial certification date is September 1, 2006, or later and you do not satisfy the performance review requirement, you will not be eligible for Professional certification. 23
