  1. Question of the Day • If Little Mickey's Mom has four children, Penny, Nickel, and Dime. What is the fourth child's name? • A Rooster stood on the roof of a barn and laid an egg. Which way did the egg roll, North or South? – The wind is blowing from the East.

  2. Enzymes, Photosynthesis, & Cellular Respiration Entire Unit 2012

  3. Goals for the Day • Be able to describe what an enzyme is and why it is important. • Be able to define denaturing and how proteins could become denatured.

  4. Question of the Day What two things can denature an enzyme? What does it mean to denature an enzyme?

  5. Chemical Reactions The breaking down or building up of substances -Enzymes Help Accomplish

  6. Example of a chemical equation Na + Cl NaCl The arrow is like an equals sign

  7. Chemical Reactions -The breaking down or building up of substances Reactants = what we start with Products = what we end with

  8. Example of a chemical equation Na + Cl NaCl The arrow is like an equals sign

  9. Chemical Reactions Chemical reactions require energy to start

  10. Chemical Reactions What does activate mean? (Think about activating your new cell phone) Activation Energy -is the energy needed to start a chemical reaction

  11. Catalase Catalase 2H2O + O2 2H2O2

  12. Substrate: Molecule that uses an enzyme Active Site : Folds in an enzyme where the substrate fits

  13. ENERGY TIME Activation Energy is the energy needed to start a reaction ACTIVATION ENERGY Reactants Products

  14. Enzymes Enzyme – A protein that acts as a catalyst Catalyst – a substance that speeds up a chemical reaction without being used up or destroyed. Enzymes are responsible for almost ALL chemical reactions in living things (Organisms).

  15. Enzymes How does an enzyme speed up a chemical reaction? ENZYMESspeed up a chemical reaction by lowering the activation energy

  16. Enzymes ENERGY TIME ACTIVATION ENERGY ACTIVATION ENERGY with ENZYME Reactants Products ENZYMESspeed up a chemical reaction by lowering the activation energy (the amount of energy required to start a reaction)

  17. Enzymes We put the enzyme above the arrow, and not on the side of the reactants or products Example of a chemical equation Reactants Product AB A + B ENZYME

  18. ENZYMES Enzymes do not ever get used up. Enzymes do not die, but they can denature (become unusable, ruined, no longer work)

  19. Catalase Catalase 2H2O + O2 2H2O2

  20. ENZYMES • Three things that effect enzyme activity • Temperature • 2. pH (acidic or basic) • 3. Concentration (how many enzymes are working)
