  1. 4-15 • enzyme that breaks hydrogen bonds between nitrogenous bases = … • enzyme that adds nucleotides to form a new strand of DNA = … Question of the Day

  2. 4-28 • DNA has thymine, but RNA has _____. • Guanine pairs with _____ in DNA. • Monomer of a protein = Question of the Day

  3. Assignment 4-18 Front of handout – due end of period today READ pages 200-202 (my.hrw.com) AND complete #s 1-2, 4-8 on the bottom of page 202 – due beginning of class tomorrow My.hrw.com Chapter 10 section 3 Username = dhe5n Password = p5e8n

  4. DNA

  5. RNA • RNA – Ribonucleic acid – Function = copies the DNA so it can use it in protein synthesis • There are 3 types of RNA: • mRNA – messenger RNA • rRNA – ribosomal RNA • tRNA – transfer RNA

  6. RNA = only 1 strand vs. 2 strands for DNA RNA has Uracil, DNA has thymine RNA contains a different sugar molecule – Ribose vs. Deoxyribose DNA is found only in the nucleus (of eukaroytic cells) 4 differences between DNA + RNA = …

  7. Difference Between DNA & RNA

  8. TRANSCRIPTION • What is Transcription? • The process by which enzymes make a RNA copy of the DNA strand • Review - What are the 3 types of RNA? • mRNA – messenger RNA • rRNA – ribosomal RNA • tRNA – transfer RNA

  9. TRANSCRIPTION • What is the function mRNA? • The RNA is a copy of the DNA • This leaves the nucleus + moves to the cytoplasm to the site of protein synthesis. • It carries the information needed for making a protein chain. • Combines with rRNA + involves tRNA to complete TRANSLATION

  10. TRANSCRIPTION • RNA Polymerase – enzyme that builds the mRNA strand – similar to DNA polymerase from DNA replication

  11. Transcription

  12. Transcription: Making mRNA

  13. ASSIGNMENT: Skim section 10.2 at my.hrw.com AND complete #s 1-6, 8, + 9 on page 199.

  14. DNA SONGS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1UPf7lXeO8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUA6_Ucw3i4

  15. 4-18 One way DNA + RNA are the same = One way DNA + RNA are different = Question of the Day

  16. 4-18 Unit # 8 Test = Friday 4-29 Announcement

  17. 4-18 DNA polymerase Thymine Amino acid Hydrogen bond Transcription S-phase Replication Helicase Uracil RNA polymerase Nucleic acid Peptide bond QUICK TALK

  18. TRANSLATION • What is translation? • Process by which the order of nitrogenous bases in mRNA codes for the order of amino acids in a protein.

  19. tRNA & rRNA - TRANLSATION • What is the function rRNA? • Helps to bond amino acids together in protein synthesis • What is the function tRNA? • tRNA brings amino acids to the ribosomal RNA so they can be assembled into proteins • Has the anticodon that matches with the codon on the mRNA • http://www-class.unl.edu/biochem/gp2/m_biology/animation/gene/gene_a2.html • http://www.stolaf.edu/people/giannini/flashanimat/molgenetics/transcription.swf

  20. Assignment 4-18 Handout Skim (read over) section 10.3 and complete questions #s 1-8 at the bottom of page 202 – my.hrw.com.
