  3. Pineal Gland Function • shaped like a pine cone • light absorbed by the retina is transferred and interpreted by suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) • SCN passes information on to pineal gland • secretes melatonin hormone • regulates circadian rhythms – light-dependent rhythms

  6. Melatonin • tryptophan derived hormone • melatonin production is inhibited in the presence of light • amount of light detected by SCN is proportional to the amount of melatonin produced in the evening
