  1. Regulation SW understand how to control cell cycle growth and how it could be the the cure for cancer.

  2. Controls for the cell cycle • Drill question: Write the question and answer at the top of NB page 22 • Describe what happens when you get a cut or scrape. How does your wound change as it heals? Does the body continue to grow cells where the wound has occurred?

  3. Two factors that affect the cell cycle Cell growth and division depend on 1) protein signals 2) and other environmental signals.

  4. Checkpoints – (using your textbook page 234) • G1 • G2 • Mitosis Checkpoint

  5. Cancer • Group of severe and sometimes fatal diseases that are caused by uncontrolled cell growth.

  6. Cancer Loss of Control • Tumor: no control in the cell cycle. One defective cell keeps producing more defective cells…

  7. Benign Tumors • Does not spread to other parts of the body and can often be removed by surgery.

  8. Malignant Tumors • Invades and destroys nearby healthy tissues and organs. • Metastasis: Can break away from the tissue of origin and grow spread in the body.

  9. Treatment • Chemotherapy: Drugs that kill fast growing cells • Radiation: high-energy rays are focused on an area in order to destroy cancer cells.

  10. Prevention • Avoid things that can cause cancer • UV radiation • Chemicals in cigarette smoke
