  1. 1763 Look at the countries that have a claim in the New World. What is the main difference between these two maps? How do you think this will affect the Spanish government’s policy towards the missions in Texas?

What happened… • Spain gets Louisiana from France (1763) • The United States declares its independence from England (1776) • The US (with the help of Spain and France) wins the Revolutionary War (1783) • AND all land west to the Mississippi River – except Florida • Spain stopped building new missions since the French were no longer a threat on it’s eastern border (1790s) • Now the two major powers in North America are the United States and Spain American The AMERICAN Revolution Mississippi River

  3. The Louisiana Purchase American Mexico • Spain has to give Louisiana back to France (1800) • In 1803, Thomas Jefferson (the US) buys Louisiana from Napoleon (France) for $15 million. (1803) • The United States DOUBLES in size and now has control of the Mississippi River. (important for shipping) • Father Hidalgo issues his un grito and asks for the Spanish to fight for Mexican independence (1810) • Mexico gains independence from Spain in 1821 and kicks Spain out of North America (1821) • Now the two major powers in North America are the United States and Mexico Mississippi River Mississippi River The MEXICAN Revolution

They become independent from Spain (they are the “boss” of themselves) Spain Mexico The TEXAS Revolution We haven’t talked about this yet… but we will soon… • Dates: 1835-1836 • Who Won: Texas • Most Important Result of the War: Texas is born!!!! We become independent from Mexico

Spain in Texas is no more!!!!! 1790s Spain stops building missions in Texas because France is no longer a threat 1776 The Original Thirteen Colonies (the United States) declares independence from England 1800 Spain has to give Louisiana back to France 1810 Father Hidalgo issues un grito telling the Mexican people to fight for independence from Spain. WAR!!!! (Mexican Revolution) 1783 The United States wins the American Revolution and becomes an independent nation 1763 Spain gets Louisiana from France
