  1. APHUG Amazing Race Project Kate Bussert and Brigid Fitzgerald

  2. Starting Point • Team members will begin the race in New York and then fly from 1.5 hours from JFK to their first destination.

  3. First Stop: Quebec, Canada • Team members start in Montreal, where they will spend the day studying at the National Circus School. • Each team will be given a (relatively simple) act to study and can move on as soon as they master it. • Circus arts are an important aspect of Quebec’s culture. A Cirque tent set up in Toronto. • Cirque du Soleil, a world famous circus troupe, was founded in Montreal.

  4. For a pit stop, teams will travel to Québec City, one of the oldest cities in North America. • It was founded in 1535 by French explorer Jaqcues Cartier. • Although it is a North American city, it is set up in the European style, with wealthier housing closer to the CBD and lower income housing in the suburbs. • From the Jean Lesange International Airport in Québec City, team members will travel for a total of 26 hours, with stops in Toronto and Lima to their second destination.

  5. Second Stop: Galapagos Islands • Charles Darwin observed finches on these Ecuadorian islands, which led him to develop his theories on natural selection. • Teams must identify 5 of the 13 species of Darwin’s finches present on the islands.

  6. Team members will spend the night camping on San Cristobal Island, the first of those Darwin visited. • From the Quito International Airport in Ecuador, teams will travel for a total of 28 hours, with a stop in Amsterdam. After their arrival at the Kilimanjaro International Airport, they will take a 1.5 hour bus ride to the third destination.

  7. Third Stop: Tanzania • Tanzania is home to the Olduvai Gorge, a paleoanthropological site that has provided to the most continuous evidence of human evolution over the past 2 million years. • Both hominid fossils and evidence of tools have been found. • At the Gorge, teams will compete in a faux archeological dig in which they must locate and excavate three specimens before they can move on. A photo of the Olduvai Gorge.

  8. From Kilimanjaro, teams will fly a total of 15 hours, with stops in Dar Es Salaam and Cairo. • Team members will stay in Arusha, an international diplomatic center and the de facto capital of the East African Community. • Arusha is also the closest major city to the Olduvai Gorge, an important archeological site that many refer to as the “Cradle of Mankind”.

  9. Fourth Stop: Greece • Teams will arrive in Athens and then take a 6.5 hour bus ride to Thessaloniki. • In this challenge, teams will have to race to to top of Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece. • Mt. Olympus is is extremely important culturally because it is known as the home of the gods in Greek mythology.

  10. Teams will stay in Thessaloniki which is a major economic, industrial, commercial and political center in Greece, as well as being a major transportation hub for southeastern Europe. • It is also the closest major city to Mt. Olympus. • Teams will then fly 2 hours from Athens International Airport to the Rafik Hariri Airport and then take a 1 hour bus to the fifth destination.

  11. Fifth Stop: Lebanon • Teams will have to race through the lower caves of the Jeita Grotto, a Lebanese national symbol and a top tourist destination in the country. Inside the Jeita Grotto.

  12. They will then travel approximately 20 hours from Rafik Hariri Airport to the sixth destination. • Teams will stay in Byblos, the oldest continually inhabited city in the world.

  13. Sixth Stop: China • For this challenge, teams will have to complete a full days work (no matter how long it actually takes) in a factory in the Pearl River Delta region of China. • This is a major industrial zone.

  14. From Baiyun International Airport, teams will travel 11 hours to Auckland airport for their seventh destination. • The Pearl River Delta, or Guangdong Province, is one of the most urbanized areas in the world. • Since China adopted a free-market system in the 1970’s, this region has emerged as a major economic hub. • Although the area is only 0.4% of the land area and 3.2% of the population, it accounts for 8.7% of the GDP and 35.8% of total trade.

  15. Seventh Stop: New Zealand • WakaAma, or outrigger canoe, racing is a popular sport in New Zealand with Polynesian roots. • The teams will race across the channel between the North Island and the South Island. A team of racers in an outrigger canoe.

  16. Once the teams reach the South Island, they will rush to Christchurch International Airport. • The first team to arrive will win!
