  2. Intro • After FR-relative peace in Europe • Major European war-Franco-Prussian War (1871) • Prussians win-unify Germany • France lost and humiliated-seeking revenge • Although some things seemed peaceful-dark forces at play

Long Term Causes of WWI-MAIN • M-Militarism • Dangerous European arms race • Huge armies • Heavily detailed plans of mobilization • I-Imperialism • Push for colonies very competitive • Rivalry and mistrust grew • Nationalism • Caused intense competition between nations • Ethnic groups wanted independence

Long Term Causes of WWI-MAIN • A-Alliances • Led by Prussian Chancellor Otto von Bismarck • Established to keep peace • Avoid 2 front war • Isolate France • Triple Alliance-Germany, A/H, & Italy • Also German alliance with Russia • Keep France isolated • Kaiser Wilhelm II-new ruler of Germany • Made Bismarck resign • Alliance collapsed • Russia and France joined alliance together • Worst fear for Germany • Triple Entente-France, Britain, and Russia

Balkans • SE corner of Europe • Many ethnic groups • Issue of ethnic clashes and uprisings • Ottoman Empire-in decline • Greece, Serbia, and Romania already independent • Other groups interested • Serbia wanted to absorb all Slavic people • Austria-Hungary annexed Bosnia and Herzegovina • Serbia upset • Tensions high

Assassination (MANIA) • Franz Ferdinand (heir to A/H throne) • Made visit to Bosnia • Many Serbs-assassinated by GarvilloPrincip (Serbian Blank Hand Movement) • Committed to ridding Bosnia of Austrian rule • A/H upset-sent ultimatum to Serbia • Serbia accepted most demands-not enough for A/H • Given blank check by ally Germany • Russia mobilized for war against A/H • War imminent
