What is a Respirator? • Any device designed to provide the wearer with respiratory protection against inhalation of a hazardous atmosphere. • Respirators are devices that protect workers from inhaling harmful substances. • Vapors, gases, dust, fogs, fumes, mists, smoke, spray. • Some respirators also ensure that workers do not breathe air that contains dangerously low levels of oxygen (O2).

  7. Air-Purifying Respirator (APR) A respirator with an air-purifying filter, cartridge, or canister that removes specific air contaminants by passing ambient air through the air-purifying element.

  8. Filter A component used in respirators to remove solid or liquid aerosols from the inspired air. Also called air purifying element.

  9. High Efficiency Filters Filter that is at least 99.97% efficient in removing monodisperse particles of 0.3 micrometers in diameter. Known as HEPA filter. Equivalent NIOSH 42 CFR 84 particulate filters are the N100, R100, and P100 filters.

  10. Filtering Facepiece (Dust Mask) A negative pressure particulate respirator with a filter as an integral part of the facepiece or with the entire facepiece composed of the filtering medium.
