  3. Who is ECSA The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) is a statutory body established in terms of the Engineering Profession Act (EPA), 46 of 2000. The ECSA's primary role is the regulation of the engineering profession in terms of this Act. Its core functions are the accreditation of engineering programmes, registration of persons as professionals in specified categories, and the regulation of the practice of registered persons

Who is ECSA The ECSA’s vision is to ensure that South Africa enjoys all the benefits of a strong, competent, growing, sustainable and representative Engineering profession; able to provide all the expertise necessary for the socio-economic needs of the country, and to exert a positive influence in South Africa.

  10. What are Specified Categories • The Specified Category provides for the registration of persons who cannot register in the professional category, but who perform critically important work of an engineering nature which has a direct impact on public safety and health

  11. What are Specified Categories • Lift Inspectors • Lifting Machinery Inspectors • Medical Equipment Maintainer • Fire Protection Systems Practitioners • Civil Laboratory Technical Controller

Engineering Attributes Engineering Problem Solving • Define, investigate and analyse specifically-defined engineering problems (tasks) • Design or develop (plan) sustainable solutions to specifically-defined engineering problems (tasks) • Comprehend and apply knowledge embodied in established specific engineering practices and knowledge specific to the field in which the applicant practice

  13. Engineering Attributes Managing Engineering Activities • Manage part or all of one or more specifically-defined engineering activities • Communicate clearly with others in the course of the applicant’s specifically-defined engineering activities

Engineering Attributes Impacts of Engineering Activity • Recognise the foreseeable social, cultural, environmental and sustainability effects of the applicant’s specifically-defined engineering activities generally • Meet all legal and regulatory requirements, protect the health and safety of persons and adhere to sustainable practices in the course of the applicant’s specifically-defined engineering activities

  16. Engineering Attributes Initial Professional Development (IPD) • Undertake independent learning activities sufficient to maintain and extend the applicant’s competence.

Discipline Specific Attributes Communicate at work • Oral communication is maintained and adapted as required to promote effective interaction in a work context. • Information is accessed from standing instructions, visual information and a range of other workplace texts and responses where required are appropriate to the context. • Written communication is clear and unambiguous and at an appropriate level for designated target audiences.

Discipline Specific Attributes Use mathematics and statistics in real life situations • Mathematical functions are used correctly to solve routine workplace problems and tasks. • Findings on life related problems are interrogated in terms of their cause and solution. • Mathematical techniques are effectively and accurately applied in real life situations.

  19. Discipline Specific Attributes Interpolate Materials Properties from Test Result • Establish the requirement for retest of certain properties’ tests. • Issue and sign valid results. • Provide estimation of Materials Properties’ values based on related test results.

Discipline Specific Attributes Take responsibility for the Implementation of Quality Assurance for a Test Result • Inspections comply with laboratory best practice requirements. • Understanding of the relevant OHS and SANS requirements is demonstrated. • Unsafe conditions are identified and corrective actions are taken.

  21. Discipline Specific Attributes Take responsibility for the Implementation of Quality Assurance for a Test Result • Access to workplace is limited to involved personnel only. • Test results are linked to established QA procedures and test methods.

Discipline Specific Attributes Produce and maintain administrative reports • Reports are generated, stored and retrieved. • Different paths are used for obtaining information for schedules. • Corrective action is implemented to improve quality of project work. • Reports are used in providing administrative and financial control of the business

Discipline Specific Attributes Manage Laboratory output • Tasks are prioritised to meet testing timeframes and specific requirements. • Analyses of work requirements are compared with relevant business plans and microenvironment. • Potential risks that may affect laboratory performance are recognised and appropriate actions are taken.

  24. Discipline Specific Attributes Manage Laboratory output • Legislation that may impact on the work environment is identified and actions are taken to direct work activities to comply with the legislation. • Requirements are ordered and procured in advance of being required.
