It’s MOVING DAY! • When Chris was three years old, his family moved into a new house on the other side of town. • Chris moved again when he was in 6th grade to a beautiful home with ENORMOUS Elm trees in his yard. • QUIZ!   4. Elementary School Chris attended Brenton Downs School. Chris’s favorite book is Harold and the Purple Crayon. Chris walked a mile and a half (1.5 miles)to school. If Chris walked to school and back home, how many miles did Chris walk? High School Chris attended East Grand Rapids High School. Chris really enjoyed math and science classes in high school. Chris never took an art class in high school, but he was given the chance to go to college study art. Back-to-School

  5. Chris went to college at the University of Michigan, and later went to a school in Rhode Island. He studied sculpture, an art form that deals with making objects, rather than drawing pictures.   8. Chris Van Allsburg:Author & Illustrator • With strong encouragement from his wife Lisa, Chris began drawing and eventually writing several of America’s favorite children books. • He wrote and illustrated 15 of his own books and illustrated 3 other author’s books.

The Caldecott Medal • The Caldecott Medal is given to an illustrator who’s drawings for a children’s book are above all the rest. • Chris Van Allsburg won 2 medals: one for Jumanji and one for The Polar Express. Both of these books have since become movies. • Chris has won 34 awards total for all of his books.

  11. Fun Fact About Fritz If you have read more than one of Chris Van Allsburg’s books, you may have noticed a little dog. Fritz, a white bull terrier dog, is introduced in Chris’s first book The Garden of Abdul. Chris’s brother-in-law (his sister’s husband) had a dog named Winston that the character Fritz was drawn after. After the first book, Chris chose to draw Fritz or a part of Fritz in every book in honor of Winston. So the next time you read one of Chris’s books, play a little game of “I Spy” with Fritz!

  12. So what is Chris up to now? • Chris and his wife Lisa are busy taking care of their two daughters Sophia, 14, and Anna, 10. They live in Rhode Island. • Chris works in his art studio creating sculptures and possibly more books! • Chris enjoys riding his bike and playing tennis. BUT MOST OF ALL… • Chris enjoys playing his recorder through is nose!!! YIKES!
