THE HIGHLIGHTS – PART 1 • §55002 Course Standards COR shall include the expected number of contact hours for the course as a whole • §55002.5 Credit Hour Basic unit of college credit is defined to avoid reference to specific term lengths (was described in terms of hrs/week over a 16 week term): • 48 hrs of lecture, study, lab work = 1 unit credit • 96 hrs of lecture, study, lab work = 2 units credit • Credit shall be adjusted proportionately to lecture, study, lab work in ½ unit increments (may use < ½ unit increments)

THE HIGHLIGHTS continued • §55007Multiple Enrollments Prohibits enrollment in two or more sections of the same credit course at the same time. • §55022Pass/No Pass Option CR/NC P/NP Implementation Date: Fall 2009 • §55024Withdrawal §55025Grade Changes • Removal of Wif determination ofdiscriminatorytreatment • Substitute faculty memberforgrade change request if student claiming discriminatory treatment, possibility of gross misconduct, or instructor not available

  5. THE HIGHLIGHTS continued • §55040Course Repetition – Substandard Work • Course repetition:allows2 times(was one time) and may claim each for apportionment (for a total of 3 times: the original + 2 repeats) • May allow a 3rd repetition for extenuating circumstances (no apportionment)

THE HIGHLIGHTS continued §55063 Associate Degree • Must have18 unitsin amajor or area of emphasis • These 18 units must be taken in a single discipline or related disciplines (as listed in the Taxonomy of Programs) or in an area of emphasis involving lower division coursework which prepares students for a field of study or for a specific major at UC or CSU. • May not award an Associate degree absent the 18 unit major or area of emphasis. • Associate degrees based solely on IGETC or CSU Breadth are non-compliant. • Students admitted Fall 2009:Each course in the major/area of emphasis much be completed with a grade of C or better or a P.

THE HIGHLIGHTS continued • §55070 Credit Certificates Sequence of Courses 18 units or more • Defined as an educational program requiring CO approval • Known as Certificate of Achievement • Transcripted • May develop a Certificate of Achievement based upon IGETC or CSU Breadth Sequence of Courses 12 - 18 units • May submit to CO for approval and thus may be called Certificate of Achievement • Transcripted Sequence of Courses < 18 units and Not Approved by CO • May not be called certificate of achievement, certificate of completion, or certificate of competency. • Cannot be transcripted. • Ideas for names for these non-approved < 18 unit sequences: Skills Certificate or Career Certificate FALL 2008 – NAMING/DESIGNATION OF CERTIFICATES

THE HIGHLIGHTS continued • §55100 Course Approval • This is stand-alone course approval!! • Has your Curriculum Committee been trained? • Did you meet the November 1 deadline for submitting your certification of stand-alone training to the CO? • §55150-55 Noncredit Courses/Programs • This memorializes in T5 the emergency regulations that were adopted by the BOG in January 2007 to implement the criteria for enhanced funding for noncredit courses. • §55151 defines noncredit certificates of completion and competency • May not be referred to as certificates of achievement. FALL 2008: NAMING/DESIGNATION OF NONCREDIT CERTIFICATES

THE HIGHLIGHTS continued • §55200-10 Distance Education • Incorporates language from the DE guidelines to clarify that a course is DE for reporting purposes if at least 51% of the hours of instruction occurs at a distance. • Separate approval of DE courses required if any portion of the instruction is designed to be provided through DE

THE HIGHLIGHTS continued • §55220 Excursions and Field Trips • Colleges allowed to use grant or categorical funds or funds from an auxiliary organization to pay for student expenses (if allowable by the funding source). • Restrictions where a student cannot afford to attend do not apply to study aboard programs (apply only to trips which are integral to the completion of a course)

A SNEAK PREVIEW OF PART 2 • Timeline Consultation Council – January BOG 1st Reading - March • §55024 Withdrawal • By July 1, 2009, establish a policy on W in credit courses – not to exceed 4 times • After authorized number of Ws, student must receive a grade or a different nonevaluative symbol. • Exemption to W policy – student who withdrew due to fighting wildfires, evacuation, suffered loss due to wildfires

PART 2 continued • §55064 Acceptance of Noncredit Courses • Permits a student to petition to have a noncredit course counted toward credit for the Associate degree • Recommended to be repealed – use credit by examination • §55154 Adult High School Diploma Program • Delineates criteria for such programs including: • number of high school units (160 hs credits) • types of courses • categories of coursework (parallel to Associate degree) • hours of noncredit instruction to high school credit

PART 2 continued • §55253-55 Coop Work Experience Education • Cleanup language • Provides for alternatives to the in-person visit with the employer • §55502-32 Matriculation • Cleanup language • §58106 Limitations on Enrollment • Revised to recognize recently enacted legislation allowing use of multiple criteria for admission into nursing programs

PART 2 continued • §58160 Noncredit Course Funding • Cleanup language to address SB361 • Spells out the 10 noncredit course categories eligible for apportionment: • Elementary & secondary basic skills • ESL • Short-term voc • Workforce prep courses in basic skills • Citizenship • Parenting • Persons with substantial diabilities • Older adults • Home economics • Health and safety education

PART 2 continued • §58161.7 Repetition of Noncredit Courses • The Chancellor shall report to the BOG by January 15, 2009 on appropriate limitations on state apportionment for repetition of noncredit courses including multiple enrollments in the same course during the same term. • Developed in consultation with Senate, CIOs and other appropriate groups • Adopt appropriate limitations by June 30, 2009.
