Learning Outcomes • Review, compare and critically evaluate research material from academic and applied research literature. • Define, specify and contextualize a legitimate research question. • Select and use the appropriate research paradigm and methods for a given research scenario. • Justify the choice, design and implementation of research paradigm and methods. Assessment • Forum Contributions 10% • Description: Continuous and regular contributions to the module’s graded forum focusing on discussions and analysis of Applied Research Methods. • Presentation 30% • Description: You will present the topic and plan for your dissertation. This presentation will be given at the first day of the LRC Summer School. The presentation will be open to all participants of the summer school. You will have 15 minutes for your presentation, followed be 13 minutes for questions and answers. • The presentation will have to be uploaded to Moodle on Sunday, 19 May, 23:55 Dublin time. You will only be allowed to use the presentation uploaded to Moodle for your live presentation. • In your presentation, you should cover: the problem you will address with your dissertation; the state-of-the-art in relation to your topic/problem; the solution you propose to the problem presented; the methodology chosen to address the topic; schedule for your work. • Due: 19 May (file upload to Moodle)/20 May delivery at LRC Summer School CS6252 Directed Studies: Applied Research Methods

  6. Assessment (continued) • Report 60% • Description: Outline of proposed dissertation of approximately 3,000 words, which will have to be delivered by 02 June, 23:55 Dublin time, using Moodle. The report should include a cover page, an automatically generated table of contents, with header/footer, page numbers, and a reference section with relevant literature and websites relating to the topic. The report should include: • A description of the problem to be addressed by the dissertation (research question); • A description of the state-of-the-art, and the main papers/books and authors in the field; • The solution you propose to the problem presented (expected outcome of the dissertation); • The methodology you will choose for your research; • Proposed table of contents with a short description of the contents of at least the main paragraphs; • Schedule for your work. • Due: 02 June CS6252 Directed Studies: Applied Research Methods
