Dynamic Radioactive Particle Source - Evaluation of CAM Samplers with Plutonium Aerosols

This report discusses the use of the Dynamic Radioactive Particle Source (DRPS) to evaluate CAM samplers with plutonium aerosols. The DRPS provides a cost-effective and non-contaminating solution to replicate the presence of a plutonium aerosol cloud, allowing for iterative development and evaluation of CAMs.

  2. Dynamic Alpha Particle Source Problem: ** Evaluation of CAM samplers with plutonium aerosols ** Time intensive, expensive, requires special facility. Solution: ** Dynamic Radioactive Particle Source (DRPS) ** Replicates the presence of a plutonium aerosol cloud.

  3. Dynamic Alpha Particle Source Designed to dynamically introduce radioactivity, with the appropriate alpha spectrum.

  4. Dynamic Alpha Particle Source Current Evaluation Techniques • Check Source • Pu-239 Aerosol Generation

  5. DRPS Puff Release - Integrated

  6. DRPS geometry for replication of a puff release

  7. DRPS geometry for replication of a chronic release

  8. DRPS Chronic release replication

  9. DRPS chronic release with actual CAM response

  10. DRPS mounted in a Canberra filter cartridge

  11. Dynamic Alpha Particle Source • Provides non-specialized in-house testing • Low cost: ~$2,000 (Pu aerosol ~$10,000 per test) • Control of CAM for multiple test scenarios • Repeatability • Simulation of realistic plutonium aerosol spectrum • Supports iterative development/evaluation of CAMs • Adaptable for use in a number of different CAMs • Does not contaminate tested CAM sampler
