See: http://international.cecs.ucf.edu International Engineering Minor

  5. Total of 18-20 hours. • Six to eight credits of a foreign language, preferably at UCF (but possibly overseas) • Three credits of cultural coursework at overseas partner institution • An experience abroad consisting of either: • Nine credits of engineering coursework that will count towards degree program, or • Three credits of engineering coursework and six credits of internship overseas What does this minor consist of?

  6. The IE minor requires an experience abroad. • Central focus of program!!! • No exceptions!! • Can be for: • 1 semester (minimum) • 2 semesters • Credits earned overseas can and must apply to degree. • Financial aid is available. What if I don’t want to go overseas?

  7. Consult with the IE Minor advisor (Ms. Hilary Falcon, EN I–107) to: • Enroll in minor program • Select semester for study abroad • Select most appropriate overseas institution • Select coursework to take abroad • Assist w/ language requirements (if applicable) • Get written approval from your department so that coursework applies towards your degree. • If language training is not required, then submit to language fluency evaluation and obtain waiver. • Select and enroll in appropriate substitute classes if waiver is granted Procedure Phase I - Academic

  8. Procedure Phase II - Logistic • Meet with counselor at the Office of International Studies (OIS) to make the logistics arrangements • See and/or contact Ms. Maureen Waked mwaked@mail.ucf.edu • Apply to overseas partner institution of choice • Make arrangements to enroll in appropriate classes there as well as at UCF • Make living arrangements www.studyabroad.ucf.edu

  9. Apply for need-based or merit-based scholarships. • Get your passport. • Apply for and secure visa • Purchase Airline tickets Procedure Phase III – Final

  10. Procedure – Phase IV • Pack your bags and go

  11. Grades will be sent in by overseas institution to Office of International Studies. • Grade will be converted to A/B/C/D/F and assigned to your UCF course • You may remain in country for additional time • depending on country and length of visit. • You may wish to do an internship abroad. Phase V - Upon Completion of Semester

  12. Eligibility • UCF undergraduate in engineering, IT or computer science. • graduate students also OK, but some limitations apply • Junior or senior standing (not too close to graduation). • 2.5 GPA or recommendation from faculty.

  13. Very important, but a bad excuse • Cost of tuition is same – you pay it at UCF • Cost of apartment is roughly same • Cost of food is roughly the same • Transportation on site generally cheaper - no car • Air fare: $500 to $2000, depending on location • Visa, passport, fees, etc: $500 to $1,000 • Entertainment – can be high ($2K to $3K) How much will it cost me?

  14. Several potential sources of financial aid • UCF general aid • UCF specific program aid • Third party opportunities • Paid internships • Rich uncle Let’s go over these … Financial Aid

  15. Several sources of small amounts of money are available throughout UCF • Burnett Honors College – grants available to members of the BHC ($1,000) • OIS – Small need-based grants are available from OIS ($1,000) • SGA – Provides small sums of $$ to cover some expenses ($300 to 500) • Professors who may have research funds for international collaborations UCF General Aid

  16. Very attractive, but only for specific locations • Must meet eligibility criteria • US citizenship • Certain majors only for the various universities • Competitive, but not highly so • Students being currently sought!! UCF Specific Program Aid

  17. Provides up to $5,000 for study to Brazil • Universidad Federal de Rio de Janeiro (Rio) • Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Rio Sul (Porto Alegre) • All undergraduate and graduate engineering, IT and CS students eligible • Must learn (or already speak) Portuguese. • Language training available • At UCF • At PUCRS upon arrival in Brazil FIPSE/CAPES Program - Brazil

  18. Atlantis DeSIRE • Provides up to $5,000 for study to • France (Universite Joseph Fourier - Grenoble) • Poland (AGH Univ. of Science & Technology – Krakow) • Czech Republic (Brno University of Technology) • Undergraduate and graduate students eligible • But some constraints exist • English language instruction possible • … but not guaranteed. FIPSE Atlantis Program - EU

  19. Many organizations provide funds for study abroad. • The Gilman Foundation (www.iie.org/gilman) • The Lincoln Scholarship Program (Google it) • The Fulbright Program (www.fulbrightonline.org) • The Whitaker Foundation (www.whitakeraward.org) • National Security Education Program(www.iie.org/nsep) • StudyAbroad.com Third Party Organizations
