  2. Title • What are kids thinking? Influences and reasons for smoking among high school students to determine appropriate substance abuse prevention program.

  3. Target School • Massapequa High School • Students are 95% white, 3% Hispanic or Latino and 2% Black or African American with 924 male students and 911 female students • High school has an open campus policy • students are seen smoking at the local stores and shops on their lunch period

  4. Rationale • Tobacco use and dependence is the leading preventable cause of morbidity and mortality in New York State (NYS) • 25,500 deaths in New York State • Appropriately determine a substance abuse prevention program and curriculum modification for the Massapequa School District.

  5. Goal and Objectives • Goal: To determine the influences and causes of teen tobacco use. • Obtain permission to conduct survey from the principal of Massapequa High School and parental permission for student’s participation in survey. • Development of survey questionnaire • Administer Survey and Collect Data • Analyze Data • Write Report • Report results of survey to principal and parents. Provide a written copy of the report for all parties

  7. Participants • Ten to fifth teen health classes. • 10th, 11th and 12th grade • 200 students • Ages

  8. Tools and Instruments • 38 item questionnaire • NYTS survey • Designed to provide a baseline for comparing progress toward meeting the Healthy People 2010 goals for reducing tobacco use among youth
