  1. Consequences from new products on up-stream processes (WP1) Morgan Vuillermoz, Guillaume Legrand FCBA EU Hardwood meeting december 2015

  2. Consequences from new products on up-stream processesprinciple • Discussions with SIMONIN to get a 1st description of the « ideal lamella » for a specific BLC type • Questions to be tackled • Production costs and value on the market • At primary processing (including round wood supply) • At secondary processing • Strength graded sawn-products and their availability (as a sawmill output and in the forests) • identification of the gaps with current conditions in terms of organization and material • Foreseeable changes in production and adapted lamella specifications (compromise)

  3. Consequences from new products on up-stream processesStatus and plan for next months • 1st campaign « GL? (24?) out of homogenous batches of square-edged timber » • Interviews at SIMONIN and MUTELET (sawmill) • Production costs and organisation constrains • 2nd campaign « GL? Out of mixed qualities » • Strong expectations from the sawmillers : more knots, sapwood • New case study on Inner / outer lamellas and their weight in the sawmilling and BLC process  Foreseeable changes for sawmilling and BLC production to be documented (hopes & beliefs vs facts)

  4. 1st campaign : Specifications of the “ideal lamella” Requested square edged timber as the main constituent of final product. • Oak • Dimensions : 27 x 160 mm • Length : as much as possible 2,500ml ; always > 1,000ml • Moisture content: 10-12% • Aesthetics if any: QF2/3 (according to EN 975-1) • Willingness to pay by the end-product manufacturer depending on his own process and price on the end market • Time before delivery: 3 weeks • Volume: 20 m3 NB: Strengthgradingthroughequivalence (NF B52.001)

  5. Resource - dependent differences in the BLC process • Lots of qualitative aspects… • Non standardised conditions for the BLC production Work in progress

  6. Feedback from the supplier (oak sawmill) • High expectations fulfilable only under adapted conditions: time for delivery, product mix (length), clear specifications on the square edged timber… • Otherwise additional costs to be supported by the client + 40% when lamella are produced from selected Reluctance to sell standard lengths ….

  7. Next steps… • Finalise analysis of the 1st campaign • Clarifications on the production costs • lab results on the beams • Dialogue with industry • 2nd round of analysis during the 2nd campaign • Specification of the lamella to be trialed • Production costs at all stages • Dialogue with industry

  8. Proposal for a shared approach about new products consequences on up-stream processes:Did you consider joining our approach? Morgan Vuillermoz (morgan.vuillermoz@fcba.fr) Guillaume Legrand (guillaume.legrand@fcba.fr)
