2. Welcome to the EIGCA Library It is housed at the Institute’s headquarters in Bramley, Surrey.

3. EIGCALibrary It contains over 1000 books on the subjects of golf course architecture and related subjects.

4. EIGCA Library It also takes about a dozen journals and monitors many more on the internet.

EIGCA Library The library is arranged in a simple alphabetical classification system: REF Reference books ARCH Golf course architecture BIOG Biographies of golf course architects CLUB Books on specific golf courses – notably club histories CONF Conference proceedings COUR Collections of course reviews ENVI Environment and sustainability GAME Books about the Game of golf and ‘how to play’ HIST Histories of golf IND The golfing industry IRRI Irrigation LAND Landscape design MAN Course management and other management topics SOIL Books about soil structure TURF Turfgrass and greenkeeping topics DISS Student dissertations

6. EIGCA Library Each book is given a ‘Shelf Mark’ to place it on the Library shelves relative to other books on similar topics. Shelf Marks consist of the classification code plus three letters of the author’s name: ARCH(GRA) Golf Course Design, by Robert Muir Graves and Geoffrey Cornish or three letters to indicate who the book is about plus three letters for the author: BIOG/MOR(JOY) The Scapbook of Old Tom Morris, by David Joy or three letters to indicate which country the book deals with plus three letters for the author: COUR/FRA(BES) France’s Most Beautiful Courses, by Jean-François Bessey or three letters to indicate which country the book deals with plus three letters for the club: CLUB/ENG(BLA) Blackwell Golf Club 1893-2000, by Charles L Wade

7. EIGCA Library The Library holds a number of rare and valuable books, some published many years ago. These can be found in the catalogue but are kept in a locked drawer and may be viewed in the Library but cannot be borrowed.

9. EIGCALibrary You can search by category – the main sections of the classification

10. EIGCALibrary Or you can search by keyword – any word appearing in the title or description of the book

11. EIGCALibrary For example ‘Colt’ will retrieve books by or about Harry Colt or club histories where he was the original architect Note: there are 74 books found in this search

Click on the cross alongside the title for a full description, including the Shelf Mark, which will tell you where to find the book in the Library EIGCALibrary Shelf Mark Unless the shelf mark contains ‘REF’ all books can be borrowed. Title Format If the format is given as ‘Digital’, it means I can email you a copy.

13. EIGCALibrary Journals contain much useful information which can be difficult to find. The Library indexes all journal articles which are considered to be of interest to EIGCA members and produces a monthly ‘What’s in the News’ list in its newsletter.

14. EIGCALibrary These are added to a database which can be viewed on the website once you have logged in as a member. You can then see ‘Members Only’ content in a drop down menu when you click on your name. By clicking on ‘Journals’ you will be taken to the Journals database.

15. EIGCALibrary Here you can search for the original journal that the articles were published in

16. EIGCALibrary Or you can search by keyword – any word appearing in the title or description of the article

17. EIGCALibrary Again, click on the cross for a full description, including the journal the article was published in. This sometimes includes a URL which links to the full text.

18. EIGCALibrary This database also contains references to articles in composite books such as Paul Daley’s Golf Architecture: a Worldwide Perspective. This and many of the individual books that have been indexed in this way can be seen in the list of Journals. Others are simply listed as ‘Library Book/Pamphlet’

19. EIGCALibrary The Library produces a monthly newsletter, Golf Information News, which is sent out to all members, including students. As well as the ‘What’s in the News’ section it includes news about websites and publications which may be of interest to members. All items included in the newsletter can be seen under ‘Library News’ on the website.

20. EIGCALibrary At the start of any assignment you should first find out what has been written on the subject. Search the Library Catalogue and the Journals Database, and obtain any relevant copies. You will probably also do a general search on the Internet. As with all information, be very critical Who is the author? Is he/she an expert on the topic? Is this the original place the content was published? How should it be cited? Are the facts accurate? Do they match up with what I've learned about the topic? Am I sure that the information provided in this article is credible?

21. EIGCALibrary Useful websites: Our own, of course. Look at the sections on Design, Sustainability, and the Articles (under Knowledge) – these are written by members on topics of interest. United States Golf Association - www.usga.orghere you will find past issues of their Green Section Record (under Course Care) The American Society of Golf Course Architects - www.asgca.orgthey have a detailed section on course design and free downloads of many of their publications. Golf Club Atlas - www.golfclubatlas.comincludes course profiles and a useful timeline of golf course architecture.

22. EIGCALibrary Once you have identified books or articles you would like to see you may have to contact the Librarian in order to get copies. librarian@eigca.org You may borrow two books at any one time for a period of two weeks which may be renewed if no one else has requested them.
