  2. City Wastewater Treatment • Septic systems are the most common method for waste water disposal. • Primary treatment of waste water removes about 60% of suspended solids from wastewater. • Wastewater then proceeds to Secondary treatment where roughly 90% of suspended solids are removed.

  3. Wastewater Treatment Cont. • Finally, after wastewater has gone through primary and secondary treatment, the clarified water is treated with chlorine to kill bacteria, sometimes ultraviolet light. • Treatment water, or effluent, is piped into rivers or oceans after both treatments.

  4. Wastewater being purified • Sludge that is removed from wastewater is sent to digesting vats, where microorganisms decompose most of the matter. • The result, a wet solution of “biosolids” is then dried and either disposed of in a landfill, incinerated, or used as fertilizer on cropland.

  5. Artificial Wetlands • Wetlands are already natural water purifiers • Wastewater the has gone through primary treatment at a conventional facility is pumped into a wetland. • Microbes in algae and aquatic plants decompose and filter the remaining pollutants. • The “treated” water is then released into waterways or left to percolate underground • Constructed wetlands also serve as havens for wildlife and areas for human recreation

  6. FUN FACT!!! • Each year about 6 million dry tons of sludge are generated in the U.S. (EWWW!)
