  2. Map of Libya: • Libya is located in northern Africa off the Mediterranean Sea.

Leaders Being Overthrown: • Muammar Gaddafi • The main reason for the revolution • He overthrew King Idris I in 1969 • He abolished the Libyan Constitution of 1951 • Most of the business enterprise in Libya is Gaddafi and his family • He was 27 when he became dictator of the country • He was killed October 20, 2011 (age 69) by rebels

Leaders of the Revolution: • The leaders of the revolution include longtime opponents of the Gaddafi government • Important people include: • MahmoudJibril: Head of Government • Mustafa Abdel-Jalil: Chairman of the National Transitional Council • Abdel HafidhGhoga: Vice Chairman of the NTC • Ali Tarhouni: Finance Minister • FathiTerbil: NTC member • KhalifaHifter: Senior Commander of rebel troops • Gen. Abdul Fattah Younes: Former military commander, killed July 28, 2011 • Ali al-Essawi: Executive Branch Deputy

  5. Who are the Libyan Rebels? • Most of the rebels are males • All are against Gaddafi and want democracy for Libya • The first time they officially met was in February, 2011

  6. More Facts: • The conflict started around February • More than 1% of Libya’s population has been killed in this civil war our of the 6.5 million people that live there

  7. Similarities to the American Revolution: • Libyans were trying to remove the old leader and replace their policies with democracy • Their ruler, Gaddafi, was unfair to the people of Libya, much like the King to the colonists • People in Libya, like the colonists, were searching for more rights and freedom

  8. Differences from the American Revolution: • Libya formerly had a democracy before Gaddafi took over • The Libyan leader, Gaddafi, was a dictator, not a king, like the colonists • This revolution was mainly to overthrow one person and their policies rather than breaking free from the entire country, like how the colonists decided to become free from England • Libya is already a country, unlike the colonists who were trying to create a country

  9. Is Libya On The Road To Success? • I believe yes they are. Because of the recent execution of Gaddafi, it shows even more how dedicated the citizens of Libya are to change and revolution. They still have a long way to go but they are definitely on the right track and I think they will succeed in creating the country they deserve.
