  2. Vocabulary pardon An official act that forgives some crime or activity.

  3. Vocabulary impeach To charge a public official with crimes in office.

  4. Vocabulary carpetbagger A person from the North who came to the South to make money after the Civil War.

  5. Vocabulary scalawag A person in the South who helped the North’s reconstruction government for gain.

  6. Vocabulary Sharecropper A person who farms land owned by someone else and earns a share in the money made.

  7. 45.1 What was the opinion of Radical Republicans of Johnson’s Reconstruction plan? They hated his plan. They wanted to punish the South.

  8. 45.1 Explain how it was possible for the new tough plans proposed by the Radicals to go into effect? Since more Republicans won races for Congress in 1866, the Radicals were able to go ahead with their plan. Therefore Johnson wasn’t able to stop them.

  9. 45.1 What are Reconstruction Acts? The Reconstruction Acts were tougher laws created by the Radicals. It divided the South into 5 parts where each part was ran by an US Army General.

  10. 45.1 Explain how the south looked under the Reconstruction Acts. South was divided into 5 parts. A US Army General was in charge of an area. States in the South had to meet stiff rules to get back in the Union.

  11. 45.1 What rights of the white men were taken away by the Radicals? Many of them lost their right to vote.

  12. 45.1 What rights were given to the African Americans? African Americans were given the right to vote.

  13. 45.2 Explain the politics between the President and Congress during Reconstruction. While the Radicals were able to influence Congress to uphold the Reconstruction and pass on tough laws; President Johnson kept trying to stop these laws from passing.

  14. 45.2 What was the Tenure of Office Act? The Tenure of Office Act kept the President from firing anyone in the Cabinet without consent from Congress.

  15. 45.2 Why did the House vote to impeach the President? Because President Johnson broke the law (Tenure of Office Act) and fired the Secretary of War Edwin Stanton.

  16. 45.2 Do you think Johnson’s treatment of Stanton was grounds for impeachment? Why or why not

  17. 45.2 Was the President impeached? No, President Johnson was able to keep his job by one vote.

  18. 45.3 What is the difference between carpetbaggers and scalawags? The carpetbaggers were people from the North who came to the South to make money after the Civil War; while the scalawags were people from the south who helped the North’s Reconstruction government for gain.

  19. 45.4 How did life change for African Americans in the South? Radical Republicans in Congress passed three amendments to the constitution which made sure that African Americans were free and able to vote; many African Americans won seats in Congress, things were a lot better for them. However this was short lived.
